This instructor-led course will provide you with the fundamental skills for conducting stability investigations and understanding pore water pressure conditions. The content for the 3 days is outlined below, with lunch, coffee, and snacks provided for all attendees throughout.
What content will be covered in the 3-day course? Â
Â
- Fundamental theory on the limit equilibrium method and groundwater flowÂ
- 2D and 3D geometry creationÂ
- Methods for setting up strength and hydraulic material propertiesÂ
- Review of the available hydraulic boundary conditions Â
- Defining the finite element mesh in 2D and 3DÂ
- Methods for defining reinforcementÂ
- Addressing convergence issuesÂ
- Example analysis workflow, including integration of finite element pore water pressures in limit equilibrium stability analyses, back analysis, and coupled consolidation analysisÂ
Â
What should I have? Â
- Please have your own laptop with the latest version of GeoStudio, as well as a mouse and charger.Â
- Prior to your course, you will be contacted via email with instructions for accessing a GeoStudio subscription for the duration of your training, along with resources to download.Â
The course is capped to ensure a quality training experience for all participants. Once the registration limit is reached, additional registrants will be added to a waitlist and notified if a spot becomes available.
Â
We require a minimum number of attendees to deliver the course. In the event of low registrations, the course will be postponed or cancelled. We do not offer refunds or compensation on personal expenses.

Kathryn Dompierre completed a B.Sc. in civil engineering at the University of Manitoba, a M.Sc. in environmental policy at the London School of Economics and Political Science, and a Ph.D. in geoenvironmental engineering at the University of Saskatchewan. Her doctoral research explored the movement of pore water, contaminants, and energy through oil sands fine tailings using field testing and numerical analyses. She joined the GeoStudio engineering research team in 2016, and now leads the North American user success team for Seequent’s geotechnical analysis products (GeoStudio and PLAXIS), providing support, training, and learning content to users. Outside of work, Kathryn serves on the boards of two environmental NGOs, the Lake Winnipeg Foundation and Manitoba Eco-Network, and is involved in the Canadian Geotechnical Society’s EDI Committee.
