Seequent’s Volsung: Model to Megawatts

A one-day, in-person workshop delivered in three sessions using a real-world pre-built model. You will get hands-on with the Volsung interface, see how conceptual Leapfrog Energy models are exported and imported, calibrate to natural state by adjusting key parameters and iterating on runs, then compete in a megawatt (MW) forecasting challenge by siting and refining a new well to maximise output. Includes a practical demo of the Leapfrog Energy → Volsung hand-off.

Seequent’s Volsung: Model to Megawatts

We centre on high-temperature, field-scale workflows. Many concepts generalise to shallow systems, but near-surface design specifics are not covered in this course. In person only; no recordings will be available.

PROGRAMME

11:00–12:30 Session 1 — Volsung hands-on and Leapfrog hand-off

- Quick orientation to projects and viewers

- Exporting conceptual geology from Leapfrog Energy (demo)

- Hands-on import into Volsung and model familiarisation using a real-world pre-built project

- Guided tour of key modules: GUI, Flow Network, Reservoir, Grid, Simulator, Time Control, Geological Model, Lithology, Boundary Conditions

- Review the Simulation Log and Reports

12:30–13:30 Lunch

13:30–15:00 Session 2 — Calibrating to natural state (run and iterate)

- Parameter focus: permeability schemes and fracture intervals

- Run the model to approach steady conditions

- Read diagnostics, logs and reports

- Iterate parameters and rerun to demonstrate a working example and convergence behaviour

15:00–15:30 Coffee break

15:30–17:00 Session 3 — MW challenge — produce the most MW in the room

- Challenge brief: maximise MW by targeting a new well in the pre-built model

- Implement a candidate well and adapt the well track to optimise output

- Short production runs and side-by-side comparisons using provided assumptions

- Wrap-up: what worked, what to try next on your own projects

This workshop is proudly supported by the International Geothermal Association (IGA), in partnership with Seequent to advance geothermal knowledge and collaboration.

By the end, you will be able to:

Navigate the Volsung GUI and key modules, and understand project structure

Export a conceptual model from Leapfrog Energy and import it into Volsung

Configure and adjust parameters such as permeability and fracture intervals for natural-state calibration

Run to natural state, interpret residuals, logs and reports, and iterate to improve convergence

Add and edit a production well, run a short production case, and estimate MW output using provided assumptions

Explain the end-to-end Leapfrog Energy → Volsung hand-off and identify next steps for deeper analyses

What’s included:

Temporary access to Volsung for the sessions

14 days license provided

Certificate of completion

Requirements:

Laptop with Windows 10 or 11, 16 GB RAM recommended

Ability to install programs on your laptop

External mouse recommended

Prior exposure to geothermal or reservoir modelling helpful

Oliver Ward

Senior Solutions Engineer, Geophysics & Geomodelling

Seequent

Ollie is a Senior Solutions Engineer at Seequent and a geophysicist with more than 15 years in energy. He enables organisations to get value from Oasis montaj, Leapfrog Energy and Volsung by focusing on workflow design, project scoping, data management, and training. Before Seequent he worked internationally with WesternGeco, Schlumberger’s geophysical division, in marine seismic acquisition, processing, and interpretation. He is a member of GESGB and EAGE, a Fellow of the Geological Society of London, and serves on the UK committee for Women in Geothermal (WING).

Dr. Esteban Gómez-Díaz

Customer Solutions Specialist, Geothermal Specialist

Seequent

Esteban Gómez-Díaz is a geothermal specialist at Seequent with international expertise in reservoir characterization and numerical simulation. He recently completed a dual PhD at RWTH Aachen University and ETH Zürich through the ITN EASYGO geothermal program, where his work focused on developing quantitative methods to describe subsurface properties, translate them into stable, decision-ready reservoir models, and build robust 3D geothermal models. His experience includes applied research and industry collaborations with Reykjavík Energy and Fraunhofer IEG, as well as internships with ÍSOR (Iceland GeoSurvey) and the University of Hawaiʻi. His international work has taken him to Colombia, Mexico, the USA, Iceland, Germany, and Switzerland.

Dr. Peter Franz

Principal Scientist, Reservoir Engineering

Seequent

Peter is Seequent’s Principal Scientist for reservoir engineering and a founder of Volsung through Seequent’s acquisition of Flow State Solutions. He brings over 20 years of experience across industry and software, focusing on practical, decision-ready geothermal workflows: natural-state setup and convergence, property strategies for complex reservoirs, coupled wellbore and reservoir behaviour, calibration, and scenario forecasting. Before joining Seequent he directed Flow State Solutions, performed reservoir modelling at Mighty River Power, and worked as an Energy Solution Scientist at NIWA. Peter holds a Diplom-Physiker and a Dr.rer.nat. (PhD) in Atmospheric Physics from the University of Heidelberg, following an earlier study year at Massey University.
